CPP Death Benefit (Service Canada)

One-time payment to the estate of a deceased CPP contributor. As of January 1, 2025, the basic benefit is $2,500. A top-up of up to $2,500 (maximum $5,000 total) may apply if the deceased never received a CPP/QPP disability or retirement pension and had no eligible surviving spouse. The executor of the estate should apply within 60 days of death. If no estate exists or the executor has not applied, the person who paid for the funeral, the surviving spouse, or next-of-kin may also apply. Apply online, by mail, or in person at Service Canada.
